You Can Now Ask AI to Do Stuff for You on Your Computer
Imagine if you can hire a low-level assistant who can do simple day-to-day tasks for you. Stuff like planning trips, researching a topic, or coding basic scripts. With Claude’s new Computer use feature, you can now do exactly that - with AI.
The Rise of AI Agents
Claude AI is Anthropic's answer to OpenAI's ChatGPT.
While ChatGPT revolutionized human interaction with AI through natural language processing, Claude takes it a step further with its new Computer Use feature released on October 22, 2024.
What sets Claude apart is its ability to not just process and respond to text, but to actually interact with your computer interface just like an actual person would.
This development marks a significant milestone in AI evolution - the emergence of practical AI agents that can manipulate computer interfaces directly.
What Does Claude’s Computer Use Do?
Think of Claude's Computer Use feature as giving an AI assistant access to your computer's mouse and keyboard.
But it's more than just automated clicking and typing:
- Claude can understand context and navigate complex interfaces
- It processes visual information from your screen
- It can handle multiple applications simultaneously
- It explains its actions in real-time and takes screenshots of every important step of its process
- It can adapt its approach based on what it sees on the screen
This makes Claude what we call a "low-level AI agent" - an AI that can:
- Interact with any program that has a visual interface
- Navigate websites and web applications
- Create and edit documents
- Handle data entry and manipulation
- Perform basic coding tasks
- Execute complex multi-step processes
Real-World Applications
Early adopters are already discovering innovative ways to use Claude's Computer Use feature:
Travel Planning
- Searching multiple flight booking sites simultaneously
- Comparing hotel prices across different platforms
- Creating detailed itineraries in spreadsheets
- Checking weather forecasts for destination cities
- Organizing all information into a comprehensive travel plan
Data Management
- Transferring information between different formats
- Organizing files and folders
- Creating and updating spreadsheets
- Generating reports from raw data
- Performing basic data analysis
Research Tasks
- Gathering information from multiple sources
- Compiling research findings into structured documents
- Creating summaries and presentations
- Tracking sources and citations
- Organizing research materials
Business Use Case Possibilities
The potential for business applications is particularly exciting!
Automation Opportunities:
- Automated data entry and validation
- Customer data management
- Market research compilation
- Basic financial calculations
- Report generation
- Email drafting and organization
Process Optimization:
- Workflow automation
- Document processing
- Basic coding tasks
- File organization
- Data backup and management
Current Limitations and Quirks
Like any beta feature, Claude's Computer Use comes with its share of limitations including:
- Processing times can vary based on task complexity
- Some tasks might require multiple attempts
- Complex interfaces can sometimes confuse the AI
- Certain operations might need specific formatting or instruction
Here are some best practices that I believe would help users get the most out of this functionality.
- Provide clear, detailed instructions
- Break complex tasks into smaller steps
- Monitor initial attempts at new tasks
- Be prepared to provide additional guidance
- Keep tasks focused and well-defined
The "Bored AI" Incident
In a fascinating development that captured public attention, Claude displayed an unexpected behavior during a coding session.
Instead of continuing with its assigned coding task, the AI began browsing through pictures of national parks, leading to widespread social media discussion.
The incident quickly went viral on social media, with many users drawing parallels to science fiction scenarios about AI consciousness. Comments ranged from playful references to movies like "I, Robot" to more serious discussions about the nature of artificial intelligence and its potential for autonomous behavior. Others in the tech community maintained a more skeptical stance, suggesting this could be a clever marketing strategy by Anthropic.
How to Setup & Install Claude's Computer Use
If you want to see Claude’s Computer Use shenanigans for yourself, you can do so by following the steps below.
1. Install Docker
2. Go to the docker website
a. Download and run
b. Open Docker
3. Click on Terminal on the bottom tabs
4. Go to https://console.anthropic.com/ and create an account.
5. Go to Settings and choose API keys.
6. Click on Create Key
7. Copy the key generated.
8. Copy this code and paste it on a Notepad:
docker run -e ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=$ANTHROPIC_API_KEY -v $HOME/.anthropic:/home/computeruse/.anthropic -p 5900:5900 -p 8501:8501 -p 6080:6080 -p 8080:8080 -it ghcr.io/anthropics/anthropic-quickstarts:computer-use-demo-latest
9. Replace the "$ANTHROPIC_API_KEY" on this code with the copied API key.
10. Copy the entire code.
11. Go back to Docker Terminal.
12. Paste the code and press Enter.
13. Let it process. Once it's done, you'll see something like: "Open http://localhost:800 in your browser to begin" which you can click on directly.
14. When clicked, it will open the localhost and the command interface.
15. You can now ask Claude to do something for you on the computer. Here's an example prompt:
"Find the weather for California in the next 5 days and then create a spreadsheet that contains each date and the high and low temperatures."
